“Oh, worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness!" Psalms 96:9
Have you ever looked into a diamond ring? What makes a diamond ring vibrant and valued is the many cuts made on the diamond. The angles of the cuts are called facets. A top quality diamond will have 58 facets. 33 on the top or crown and 25 on the lower half of the diamond. The many sides of cuts in the diamond reflect and break down the light into a rainbow of pure light sparkling so to gain attention.
When this song was written the writer had the presence of God in His sights. He was captured by the glory of God and the beauty of The Lords multi-faceted character and nature. God’s goodness, God’s mercy-kindness, God’s faithfulness, God’s wisdom, God’s kingdom, God’s judgments (decision making), God’s purity and the list goes on. These facets of the Lord Jehovah, like a diamond make up the beauty of Holiness. God’s total character makes up His holiness. The Song writer saw it because his world view was attentive to the presence of God. Second, the song writer understood God is the Creator and in full and utter control of His creation. Third, he understood that the Judge of all the earth will judge justly now and in the end.
Jesus reveals this beauty as He lived His life on the earth. The Holy Spirit of Jesus has been given to the believer so the beauty of God’s holiness can be seen on the earth. He called the church to be the Beauty of God’s holiness to every generation. You can be the beauty of holiness to your family, friends neighbors...this generation.
